Alistair Darlings first budget was summed up by one commentator as “Booze and gas guzzlers pay to cut child and fuel poverty.” As a principle its a good one and as a budget, given he had little room for manoeuvre, I think he did very wellWhat he did in spades however, was remind us just how bad life was under the Tories. Do you remember 4m unemployed, interest rates at 15% and a driving principle of “there is no such thing as society”.
Which is why it's a scary thought to think that these days Scotland is being run by a bunch of tartan Tories, a one trick pony of a party who can’t see past the border at Carlisle. Remember, this is a party led by a man who said that if we left the union we would iimmediately go up the table of riches countries. So we improve our quality of life as a nation by walking away from the poor. Don’t tell me they are not tartan Tories.

Alex said just by leaving the union we would be higher up the wealth table. So we would be in real terms no better off but our league table ,place would be higher. that means there are others in Britain who are poorer than us. I would rather Scotland stuck beside those who are poor rather than walk away in a vain attempt to appear richer.
I am concerned not about my wealth but about what I, (and in this case, my nation), can do for the poverty others face.
